Marriage Licenses

The Caroline County Circuit Clerk's Office prepares marriage licenses Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

To obtain a marriage license, BOTH PARTIES must:

  1. Appear in person in the Clerk's office no later than 3:30 p.m.  An appointment is recommended but not required.
  2. Be at least 18 years old, or an emancipated minor with a court certified copy of the emancipation order.
  3. Provide a valid photo identification, such as a driver's license, passport, Virginia ID or Military I.D. 
  4. The license fee is $30.00.  Copies are $.50 or $2.50 for a Certified copy.  Payment for the marriage license must be in cash.
  5. The marriage license must be used within 60 days of the date of issue.  After 60 days if the license is not used, it is no longer valid and parties will need to reapply for a new license.  All of the steps above will be required and all fees will apply.
  6. The Court does not required blood tests or witnesses.
  7. The Court does not have a marriage commissioner on staff but does maintain a list of licensed marriage commissioners in the area upon request.
  8. The officiate will complete the license and return it to the Circuit Court.  The parties may contact the Circuit Court to pick up the certified copies or have the copies mailed to an address at the time the license is issued.
