The industrious and remarkably charitable Methodists of Wright's Chapel UMC, joined by equally generous volunteers from St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church and Salem Baptist, amassed and distributed about 14,000 pounds of canned food last Saturday, their latest good work for their annual "Christmas in April."

The fellowship hall at the church was a beehive of activity as small mountains of canned goods were divided up into grocery bags and stacks of boxes. Outside, a long line of pickup trucks waited to haul it all to St. Mary's Food Pantry and Glory Outreach.

"Nobody in our backyard should go hungry," said organizer Randy Haughn. "Nor in Virginia or our country." He said that Caroline schools and their students were big contributers.

Food was also delivered to the pantry at Social Services and to Rehobeth United Methodist. The "Christmas in April" Dinner held that night also raised money to help the pantries. "We were also able to make a financial gift of $500 to both St. Mary's and Glory Outreach for perishable food or restocking when this runs out," said pastor's assistant Molly Gee.

Sheriff Tony Lippa was an honored guest at the dinner. Appearing too was Santa Claus, who looked a lot like Major Scott Moser.

"It was a wonderful, successful event," said Molly.
