Caroline dogs and cats waiting to be adopted at the county Animal Shelter on Devils Three Jump Road are having a big day Tuesday, May 4. It's "Stamps to the Rescue" Day, and it runs from 9 a.m. until noon at the Ladysmith Post Office. Featured will be the new "Animal Rescue: Adopt A Shelter Pet" stamps that promote pet adoption.

Postmaster Todd Leake will be selling the stamps, and the Caroline Humane Society and Caroline Animal Control will also be there with t-shirts and promotional items. Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has joined with the US Postal Service to promote the stamps which were unveiled March 17 by Postmaster General Jack Potter on the Ellen DeGeneres show.

Co-owner of Halo, Purely For Pets, a pet food company, DeGeneres is contributing 1 million "first class" meals to animal shelters across the country. The stamps come in a sheet of 20, with photographs of five cats and five dogs taken by photographer Sally Andersen-Bruce. All the animals were adopted from a shelter near her home in New Milford, Connecticut.
