Memorial stone planned for old Caroline High School

Contributions are now being collected from alumni and other Caroline residents for a memorial stone to stand in front of the old Caroline High School, now known as Bowling Green Annex.

Doc Crismond of Bowling Green and C.J. Pitts of Doggett's Fork Road, Class of 1965, are leading the effort to raise funds. They can be sent to Storke Funeral Home, P.O. Box 920, Bowling Green VA, 22427, with a memo "CHS Monument."

A minimum of $1,295 is needed for a stone inscribed "Caroline High School, 1939–1969" along with a carving of two cardinals. Caroline sports teams were known as the "Cardinals."

A large stone will be purchased if $2,290 can be raised.

Students from Edmund Pendleton, Sparta, Mica, and Lee Maury High Schools combined to come to the school in 1939. With its slate roof and tall windows, it was a Caroline landmark.

All alumni from throughout the school's history are invited to contribute and attend the stone's dedication Sept. 11, 2010 in front of the school at 10 a.m. Those interested in attending should contact Crismond at 804-633-5987 or Lane at 633-5661 by June 1.

The memorial's dedication will be part of the Class of 1965's reunion activities which will include a gathering at Town Hall.
