Message from the County Administrator
June, 2010

This message is the sixth in 2010 to better update our citizens and visitors to the website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its only meeting this month on Tuesday, June 8 at the Community Services Center.

The Board of Supervisors at its June 8 meeting will consider approval of a rezoning request for transit oriented development at Carmel Church.

The Board of Supervisors will consider at its June 8 meeting on First Reading an ordinance that would establish a Permanent Auto Decal Program.

The Board of Supervisors will consider at its June 8 meeting amendments to the BPOL ordinance that will cap the amount that any business pays at $120,000.

County residents are encouraged to fill out and mail their 2010 Census Form. Census workers will be visiting homes of those who dont mail back the form. Caroline County is at 76 percent return rate as of May 26.

All county residents are encouraged to register for the Caroline Alert System. The system will notify residents of emergencies and other government news through their cell phones and desktop computers. This is a free service offered by the Board of Supervisors. Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening in County government during the month of June:

  • The Parks and Recreation Department is taking applications for its Summer Camp Program. Cost is $250 per child. Contact the office at (804) 633-7277 for information on these programs and other offerings.


  • County staff and consultants continue to work on a proposal that will allow the County to withdraw water from the Rappahannock River in the future. The Department of Environmental Quality must grant its approval before water can be withdrawn.


  • Registration is underway for residents of the Dawn community who would like to sign-up for Phase II of the Dawn Wastewater Project.


  • VDOT representatives are still reviewing the application for the Port Royal Visitors Center and bid documents will be reviewed this month to pursue construction.


  • The Board of Supervisors will continue discussion at its June 8 meeting regarding the VDOT Revenue Sharing Program.


  • Staff discussions will continue this month regarding the construction of Victory Park in Bowling Green.


  • The County is getting closer to introduce its GIS program that will assist with mapping and property identification.


  • Staff is gathering information regarding the County providing water to the Caroline Pines subdivision.


  • Staffing is finalizing information to be presented to the Board of Supervisors regarding a public-private partnership proposal to expand the wastewater treatment facility.


  • Renovation to the space formerly occupied by the Commissioner of the Revenue will take place this month in preparation for the Museum Committee to move into the area this later this year. A Grand Opening is scheduled for April, 2011.

  • The Department of Fire and Rescue will be coordinating a review of the Countys insurance rating (ISO). The process will last a couple months and could give savings to home and business owners on their property insurance.


  • Blue Ridge Appraisal continues to reassess County property in preparation for presentation in 2011.


  • Staff discussions are continuing with representatives of the Boy Scout Jamboree for the event this summer.
