January 26 Meeting Recap

BOS Approves Commercial
Zoning for Brookwood Subdivision

The Caroline County Board of Supervisors voted at its January 26 meeting to approve a rezoning request that could lead to commercial development for the planned Brookwood Subdivision.

Developer Jay Jarrell made a request to approve residential property located on the Brookwood Subdivision on the west side of Route 301 to business zoning. The concept is similar to the Ladysmith Commons business center that is located off Route 1 north in Ladysmith.

The Planning Commission had considered the plan and recommended denial to the Board of Supervisors. A public hearing was held before the BOS and opposition came from the Town Council of Bowling Green.

After weighing the facts, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to rezone the property. Bowling Green District Supervisor Jeff Sili opposed the recommendation.

Other highlights of the meeting include:

  • L.J. Moyer of the Caroline Rotary Club presented the BOS with a plaque for its continued support of the annual Senior Citizens' Gala.
  • Dr. David Sams, President of Germanna Community College, gave a presentation and asked for financial support for a new building at the Fredericksburg campus.
  • The BOS gave Utility Director John Boryschuk the nod to move forward with gathering financial data on the long-term cost to provide water to the Caroline Pines subdivision. Boryschuk was also asked to further survey the residents to see if more residents are interested in hooking on to a new system.
  • Heard from various County residents who were concerned with the implementation of the new FRED transportation routes. FRED officials present said they would look into adjusting the routes.
  • Received a request from Public School Division on spending remaining funds for capital improvements. Action was deferred until the February 9 meeting.
  • The BOS received a mid-year budget report by Finance Director Fran Hatcher.
