March 9 Meeting Recap
BOS Adopts Resolution
Opposing AP Hill Facility
The Board of Supervisors at its March 9 meeting adopted a resolution opposing the new EOD training facility to be located at Fort AP Hill.
The proposed facility has been the center of much public concern the last few months because of its close proximity to the Town of Port Royal and the Portobago Bay subdivision. Public meetings have been held and the issue has been raised at recent meetings of the Board of Supervisors.
At the March 9 meeting, the BOS went on record opposing the facility. However, the effective date of the resolution was set for March 19 to give the Department of the Army a chance to put forward a Memorandum of Understanding that would serve as a compromise to all parties involved.
AP Hill Commander Col. Jack Haefner attended the meeting and spoke on behalf of the mission of AP Hill. Col. Haefner said he would make every effort to involve high-ranking Army officials to be involved with the development of the MOU.
Should the MOU be signed in a timely fashion, the BOS would then withdraw its resolution. All five members of the Board of Supervisors voted for the resolution.
Other highlights of the meeting include:
- A public hearing was held on the FY ’11 County Budget and 11 people commented.
- Public School Division Superintendent Dr. Greg Killough presented the School Division Budget, which requests $900,000 additional in local contribution than contained in the County Administrator’s proposed Budget.
